The worst thing that happened to you, could be the best thing to happen to you

I’m writing this from the States . I am here visiting my parents – soaking in love, nourishment and joy, having the best feeling.

People often get confused when I tell them my parents live in the States and I live in India. It’s usually the other way around, right? hehe.

Well, today I am going to share with you a part of my story that I haven’t shared before. It will help make sense of this.

Have you heard that saying? The worst thing that happened to you could be the best thing that happened to you.

Well, I believe it and I have lived it.

You definitely need to have the right mindset in order to be able to see how it turns out for the best. I hope, that with today’s story, you can adopt that mindset.

I grew up in a very turbulent home. I won’t get into the details, but I will say this: I never felt safe and I was constantly stressed as a child. My parents fought all the time, my Father was a very unpredictable and angry man and we never knew what was going to happen next. My mother and I feared something as normal as going out of the house on our own because he would lose his temper and then we would be stuck at home for days on end.

When I was 17 years old, my Father literally threw my Mom out of the house with not even as much as a pair of chappals on her. It was around 9 pm at night.

I chose to walk out of the house and be with my mom even though my Father threatened me saying that I would never be able to come back again; he said that if I chose to walk out and give her footwear, I could just stay out too.

Without any money, ID or clothes, my mom and I went to a neighbour’s place to spend the night.

To the world, this is the worst thing that can happen to a woman or a family – divorce!

It was still a taboo at that point in time. Society finds it so easy to judge something like a divorce without even knowing what is actually happening.

In some cases, a divorce saves lives and it’s the best thing.

That day, in 2005, was one of the most shocking and horrible days of my life but it was also one of the best.

I was, and am, so happy my Father did what he did that night because it gifted us a new life.

A large part of what I am today is because of that day.

That event, and how drastically it changed our lives, is the reason that I am driven and resilient today.

Standing up for my mother that day came easily to me. In that moment, all of 17 years old, I realised that I will always stand up for what is true and right. I have done so my entire life.

That moment showed me my courage. I have continued to be courageous my entire life.

That event, and the challenges we faced as a result of it, is the reason I am financially independent today.

That event is the reason I so strongly believe and know that everything works out for the bestIt’s the reason I know that if you don’t move from a place that doesn’t serve you, the Universe will do it for youyou get to see the blessing in that.

Today when I say I am visiting my parents, it’s because my mom got married again in 2016. That’s when she moved to the States to be with her husband, who I now call Dad.

Dad is the dad I always dreamed of. It feels like he was meant to be my Dad all along. Of course, I did the work to overcome the trauma of the past to be able to accept him as my Dad and receive the love he gives me.

It’s so strange and beautiful how life turns out. Something I always desired was to experience what it feels like to be a child in a normal home. As an adult, you think that time has passed. As a 30-year-old, I never thought it was ever possible.

Turns out, it IS possible.

When I visit my parents I feel like a child. I get to be a child and have all my wishes fulfilled. I can’t even begin to explain how it feels to receive this love and care.

This is why I say, you can manifest absolutely anything! I get to be a child in my 30s!!!

Writing this here has brought up all the emotions. Emotions of overwhelm, wonder and gratitude mostly.

I understand that some things exist in life that are truly devastating, and in those cases, this idea that it’s the best thing to have happened, may not apply. However, in most cases, I believe this to be true.

Stories can be a source of inspiration and hope for all of us on our life journeys. So as I close, I would like to thank you for being part of my journey, and for allowing me to share mine with you.

Do you also have any such moments in your life—moments where the worst thing that happened to you turned out to be the best?

I would love to know, do share!

Love,
Raashi
