The Cure for Comparison
Today, I want to address something that I feel consumes far too many people: Comparison!
I see so many people comparing themselves to others and feeling like they aren’t “good enough”; or feeling like the other person has something they don’t.
The truth is, this isn’t useful at all. You know it. I know it.
If you find yourself comparing yourself to others, you are not alone.
Our conditioning has trained us to constantly compare & compete.
From the time we are children, we are told to be the best.
“Come first in class.”
“The best marks get the best job.”
We are compared to other children & how well they behave & do in school or sport.
Bring social media into the mix and it gets worse!
It’s time to reject that and stop comparing yourself to others.
I’m making a compelling case for it below
Comparison kills –
- Authenticity because you are so focused on the other person that you forget to see your own gifts.
- Confidence because the more you compare yourself to someone else and think they are better, the less confident you feel in your own abilities.
- Creativity because often people think that if they just follow what the other person is doing they will get the same results. Unfortunately, this isn’t what happens in most cases.
You came here as your authentic self with your own unique way of looking at this world. The way you say things is unique to you. The way you do things is unique to you.
Your creativity comes from your authenticity. When you do things in your way, in a way that comes naturally to you, the results come more easily.
When you look within, instead of outside of you, you connect with your intuition; your inner guidance.
The more you follow your intuition and see the results that come so easily when you follow your unique path, the more confident you become!
Here are 3 perspective shifts for you:
- Jordan Peterson says this about comparison. I’m telling the story in my own words.
It’s a really hot day and you’re walking on the pavement. Right now your biggest problem is that it’s hot and you have to walk in this heat because you don’t have a car. You see a man in a fancy red Porsche driving past you. The windows are up and the air-conditioning is on. You feel jealous of his comforts. You think “That lucky guy in his fancy car. What an amazing life he must leave.”
What you don’t know is that the man in the fancy red Porsche is thinking of driving his car into a wall because his wife has left him and he is drowning in debt.
Learning 1:
You never know what is happening in someone’s life based on what you see on the outside. What you see is just a fraction of their reality.
2. I had this conversation in Therapy a couple of years ago. I was going through a period where I wasn’t receiving the best vibes from some people.
My Therapist said to me: “Raashi, some people just assume that successful people got there because they had it easy or were lucky. They don’t understand the work you put in, but you know how much you’ve put in to get here.”
When you see someone who has what you want, you just see where they are right now. What you miss noticing is the work they put in to get there. It’s unfair to you and to them to compare your step 3 with their step 50.
Learning 2:
The next time you see someone who has achieved what you want to, instead of comparing yourself to them, get curious about their journey and their process: The work they put in, the preparation, their habits, their mindset, the skills they developed, the abilities they display.
3. When someone is successful or achieves something you want, they are showing you it is possible for you too. They took the risk and now have opened up a world of possibilities for you!
Eg. If someone becomes a self-made millionaire, they are showing others that it’s possible for them too! You can earn that money even if you don’t come from money.
Celebrate them for their success, for showing you it’s possible for you too!
Learning 3:
Turn comparison into Inspiration!
I’m leaving you with this quote from a post of mine that came up in my memories.
Where your attention goes your energy flows.
Where energy flows, the metaphorical grass & garden grows!
