Are you spending or investing?
I recently did an interview where I was asked what I attribute my success to. The person interviewing me said that she had seen my business, and me, grow phenomenally over the last 3 years and so she was curious. to know if I’m investing or not?
Well, first things first, I received that compliment with immense gratitude. Seeing my growth from her eyes made me appreciate my journey even more. To know that people view me as successful was truly humbling.
So, this is what I believe is the reason for this evident and consistent growth:
- I am action-oriented. The moment I have an idea, I act on it. When I want something, I ask myself “How can I make this happen?”. I don’t let fear stop me. I just go for it and let the outcome inform my next decision. Let me be clear, I am not reckless. I take action from intention and intuition and that’s what gives me the results.
- I believe in myself. I have never needed anyone to tell me they believe in me. I know that if I have a dream, it is my responsibility to make it happen. When I started, there was no real support on the business front. I followed my intuition and hired a business coach for that support.
- I prioritise my personal growth – to be more precise, my mindset and my well-being – and view it as an investment. Over the last 6 years, I have invested in my health and well-being, therapy, coaching and learning. Without this, I could not have gotten this far. Of course, points 1 & 2 lead to this. However, with just belief and action I am not sure I would have gotten this far.
Point 3 is what I want to talk to you about today.
In today’s world there is so much emphasis on the tangible; what we can SEE. This is why people find it easier to spend on the tangible over the intangible.
And society has conditioned us in a way where you easily spend money on material things but probably think a million times before investing in your own growth or yourself.
For example, I see people spend lakhs on an iPhone, but they won’t invest the same amount in coaching. The phone lasts a few years, coaching stays with you for a lifetime.
People will spend INR.50,000/- on skin treatments but won’t invest in healing their gut or addressing the root cause.
People will spend INR.30,000/- on doctors and medicine, but won’t invest in buying quality ingredients or working with a health professional.
People will spend INR.5,000/- on a night out, but won’t invest the same amount on a therapy session.
Am I saying the latter is better than the former?
Not at all.
A rich mindset focuses on buying things.
A wealthy mindset invests in experiences and things of value.
An abundant mindset says “I get to have and do both.”
Here’s the thing though, an abundance mindset or growth mindset comes from investing in yourself. It comes from prioritising peace of mind. It comes from recognising what is limiting you and what is actually helping you grow.
Think about it, a person can go and spend thousands of rupees on retail therapy because they are feeling low. The shopping probably makes them feel good for a few hours, but that feeling will eventually come back and that’s a loop you get stuck in. However, that same money could be invested in Coaching or Therapy where you can address the trigger once and for all. When that happens, you can shop when you want to and it actually makes you feel good instead of making you feel guilty.
You can apply the same thing to binge eating. You feel lonely, you order a ton of food, and then feel worse about it. If you invested that same money in a session of therapy, it would probably help you address that feeling of loneliness.
You see what I am getting at here, right?
Your mindset is your greatest asset.
Wealth comes from peace of mind.
True fulfilment is an inside job.
It has given me so much joy to see more and more people invest in their growth and well-being over the last few years – and I get to call those courageous people my clients.
I understand it can be scary. I felt that before my first big investment in my Business Coach too.
I also know that sometimes, what stops people from investing in themselves is that belief of “I am not worthy! How can I spend so much money on myself?”
Well, you are! As all my clients, who had this belief, have said: “It’s so worth it!”
I know you are here because you care about your growth, and want to grow.
The difference between wanting it and seeing the results in your life is taking that action you may have been avoiding.
If you are someone who is already investing in yourself, I celebrate you! I know that through the change you have brought in yourself, you will inspire people to invest in their growth too.
I find it’s always helpful to reflect, no matter where you are. I do this often myself.
So today, I’m leaving you with this food for thought as you ponder over your own choices: Are you only spending or are you also investing?
This applies to all resources – money, time and energy!
I’d love to hear your perspective and if you had an AHA moment, I’d love to know that too!
Love,
Raashi
