The easiest way to change your self-talk
Something that has come up often during my Private Client sessions over the past week has been: How the “narrative” or the self-talk in your mind has an impact on your life.
Yesterday, after having completed 12 sessions together, I asked my client – ‘P’, what she felt had changed for her during Coaching. P answered by saying “The narrative in my mind has completely shifted and that makes me feel more confident, focused and grounded in life.”
Here’s an example of how the changed narrative had an impact on her life:
In session 1, when P came in, she said “My self-worth is completely dictated by how I look. I am always conscious of how I look and how people perceive me.”
Yesterday, she said that the narrative in her mind has completely changed! She no longer has a disempowering conversation in her head about her body or health. This has made her feel more confident and comfortable in her own skin. She can now eat food she loves, without feeling guilty and going into a spiral. And she can fit into her pre-pregnancy jeans too!
Her entire outlook on life has changed because of that change in narrative.
Where earlier she felt she was being lazy about work, she now feels grateful that she can choose what her work day looks like.
Earlier she couldn’t voice love or appreciation for herself. Today, she can.
Earlier she constantly needed external validation. Today, she listens to her intuition and is grounded in her being.
For her, these changes are a result of the shift in narrative.
You might be wondering, what is a “narrative” exactly?
When we talk about a “narrative” in the context of self–talk, we’re referring to the ongoing story or script that plays out in our minds. It’s the internal dialogue we have with ourselves, where we create meaning, interpret experiences, and make sense of the world around us.
You know that voice in your head constantly saying:
- “I am so stupid!”
- “I am not cool. Why will anyone want to listen to what I have to say?”
- “What if everything goes wrong and I end up sad and lonely?”
- “OMG, this is totally my fault! I am always saying the wrong thing. Will they judge me for this?”
- “No one loves me!”
- “I will never be able to make it big.”
That’s the narrative that is writing the story of your life right now!
For some people, it’s not just one voice, it’s multiple voices – yours, your parents, people who bullied you, your boss.
Now, Imagine your mind as a movie theater, and the narrative as the movie playing on the screen. It’s the continuous stream of thoughts, beliefs, and interpretations that shape your perception of yourself and your reality..
For example, let’s say you had a setback at work. Your narrative might start crafting a story around it, interpreting the event as a sign of failure or incompetence. This self–talk might tell you things like, “I always mess things up,” or “I’m not good enough for this job.” These narratives can be powerful because they affect how you perceive yourself, your abilities, and your future opportunities.
Imagine, what would happen if you continued to engage in this narrative without changing it. You realise, as you continue to engage with this narrative, this same movie continues to play out in your life.
It would be like watching the same movie over and over again. And you know this movie! You’ve seen it already in the cycles that keep playing out in your life. Whether it’s yo-yo dieting, romantic relationships ending the same way or the same fight you have with your parents. You know how the story ends.
I know you want to change that.
You want a different movie and ending.
And I want that for you too!
Wouldn’t that be so fun?!
